Exeter City Football Club's Sonny Cox Aims to Make a Mark This Season

Exeter City Football Club's striker Sonny Cox is set to have a big season, with manager Matt Taylor giving him the opportunity to progress and show his quality.

What's at Stake for Sonny Cox?

Sonny Cox, now 21, has been talked about for nearly six years as a hot prospect, but has only shown glimpses of what he can offer in the senior team. With Exeter City back in League Two and the financial situation meaning that Matt Taylor's side are likely to have to rely on youth, this is now the time the Grecians could do with Cox really stepping up.

Why This Season Matters for Exeter City Football Club

Since his debut in 2020, Cox has played 111 times for City, but has scored just eight goals for the club. Last season he netted on the second day of the campaign in a 4-1 win over Blackpool - but that was the only goal he scored all season in 26 appearances. The season before, it was one goal in 27 games.

What's Next for Sonny Cox?

Cox was back on the pitch as Exeter travelled to Weston-super-Mare for a friendly on Saturday and upfront alongside Jayden Wareham, the 21-year-old showed what he can offer in an impressive performance, and capped it with a goal when he headed home an Ed James cross. "We know this is a big season for Sonny," Taylor said post-match. "We want to give him, not just the opportunity, but the real platform to progress, and goals would be a big marker for him, but he's so honest in terms of his work rate for the team.

Will Sonny Cox Take the Opportunity?

The next chance for Cox to show what he can do will either be at Torquay United on Friday night, or against Bristol City at St James Park on Saturday. Taylor said that it is likely to be a stronger side who face the Championship side on Saturday and a younger group heading to Plainmoor the night before, and so will be a good indicator of where the pecking order is.
