Exeter City Football Club's young goalkeeper Frankie Phillips made a memorable senior debut by keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 EFL Trophy victory over Tottenham Hotspur U21s. The 19-year-old's composed performance earned immediate praise from assistant manager Dan Green after the midweek group stage fixture at St James Park.

Phillips, who spent last season on loan at Exmouth Town, was called into action as Exeter City secured their win with goals from Danny Rose and Louis Cayless. Rose opened the scoring by capitalising on a mistake from the Tottenham goalkeeper, while Cayless volleyed home from a narrow angle in the 88th minute to seal the result. Cayless was also making his first senior start for the Grecians.

Frankie Phillips faced limited pressure for much of the match, with Tottenham Hotspur U21s registering their first shot on target only in the 77th minute. He dealt confidently with what came his way to preserve the shutout. "It felt brilliant," Phillips told reporters after the match. "I wanted to get a clean sheet before the game and we nullified their chances. We got better as the game went on."

Assistant manager Dan Green was quick to highlight the teenager's professionalism. "He thoroughly deserves it," Green said. "He trains outstandingly well every day and he's a real example to the young players of preparing yourself ready for the opportunity." This home win continues a positive defensive trend for Exeter City, who have now kept three clean sheets at home since the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

The clean sheet record at St James Park is a foundation the club will look to build upon in League Two, where they currently sit 16th with five points from five games. Their recent form reads DDLWL, with four goals scored and four conceded. They are seven points behind early leaders Bristol Rovers. Phillips noted that maintaining such defensive solidity will be key to picking up points in the league.

Exeter City are taking the competition seriously, according to Phillips. "If you're in a tournament, you go in to win it," he stated, mentioning the final at Wembley as the ultimate goal. The group stage now presents tougher tests against Cheltenham Town and Oxford United. Success in these matches could see the Grecians progress deep into the tournament, offering valuable experience for the club's emerging talents like Phillips and Cayless.
