Exeter City have confirmed the signing of forward Anthony Scully on a deal until the end of the season. The 27-year-old Irishman, a free agent after leaving Shrewsbury Town, was announced just hours before the Grecians' home clash with Rotherham United on October 3.
Manager Matt Taylor described Scully as a player who has 'a lot to offer' a young squad. "He will say 'Give me the ball in that moment, let me take responsibility for the next action'," Taylor said. The manager added that the club would manage Scully's workload and match minutes sensibly.
Scully, who will wear the number 25 shirt, brings a wealth of Football League experience. He has made almost 200 professional appearances, scoring 48 goals and providing 30 assists across spells with Lincoln City, Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth, Colchester United and Shrewsbury. Last season he scored five goals in 35 League Two appearances for Shrewsbury.
"I'm only 27 and I'm coming into the best years of my career, so the next move for me was the most important football wise," Scully said. He explained he had waited for the right opportunity and felt Exeter's timing and the manager's style were a perfect fit.
The signing comes as Exeter City look to climb from 20th in the League Two table, where they have nine points from nine games. Scully made an immediate impact, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Rotherham just hours after his arrival was confirmed.
Exeter's next challenge is an away trip to face Shrewsbury Town, Scully's former club, on October 10.
