Exeter City beat Accrington Stanley 2-0 at St James Park on 25 August 2023, securing their first win of the season. Jack Fitzwater opened the scoring with an overhead kick in the 90th second, and Seamus Conneely later added an own goal to double the advantage.
Opening Minutes
Within the first minute, Charlie Cummins launched a long throw into the box. The ball was headed by a red-shirted defender, but it was captain Jack Fitzwater who converted the set-piece with a spectacular overhead kick into the top corner, giving Exeter a 1-0 lead.
Doubling the Lead
In the 13th minute, Seamus Conneely inadvertently turned a Gwion Edwards volley into an own goal. Edwards had cleared a cross, but the ball deflected off Conneely and looped over the goalkeeper, making the score 2-0. The Grecians were in control after that, with Reece Cole and Josh Gordon creating chances but failing to extend the margin.
Accrington's Response
Accrington improved after the break, with Shaun Whalley and Charlie Caton hitting the target from the edge of the box. However, they were unable to force a breakthrough, and Exeter’s defense held firm. The visitors’ best opportunity came in the 72nd minute when Cole Stockton headed at Jack Bycroft, but the goalkeeper made a clean save.
Final Minutes
Exeter had several chances to add a third goal. Jayden Wareham and Reece Cole both came close, but their efforts were either blocked or missed. Taylor Perry, who came on as a substitute, volleyed over the crossbar from close range. The match ended 2-0, giving Exeter three points.
Lineup and Changes
Matt Taylor made two changes to the side that lost 1-0 to Grimsby Town. Gwion Edwards replaced Andrew Oluwabori in a wing-back role, while Josh Gordon made his full debut in place of Taylor Perry, giving Exeter a second striker from the start. Ethan Sutherland returned to the bench after a suspension.
