Exeter City beat Accrington Stanley 2-0 in a League Two match. Captain Jack Fitzwater opened the scoring with a bicycle kick in the 2nd minute, and Gwion Edwards added a second via an own goal in the 13th minute.
Early Dominance
Within 90 seconds the Grecians took the lead. Charlie Cummins launched a long throw into the box, Luca Woodhouse won the first header, and Fitzwater finished with an overhead kick to put the ball into the top corner. The goal was a perfect start for the home side.
Edwards replaced Andrew Oluwabori in a wing-back role, while Josh Gordon made his full debut in place of Taylor Perry. The squad showed a front-foot, aggressive approach, with the ball frequently in the box.
Second Goal and Defensive Solidity
In the 13th minute, Reece Cole’s 25-yard shot was parried by Louie Moulden, and the rebound was volleyed by Edwards toward goal. The ball deflected off Accrington skipper Seamus Conneely, looped over the goalkeeper, and into the net. The goal was credited as an own goal, giving Exeter a 2-0 advantage.
The Grecians were rarely troubled after that. They saw out the rest of the game with ease, protecting the goal well and maintaining a clean sheet. Manager Matt Taylor said, "We would like to - and probably should have - scored another, but we protected our goal really well today."
Tactical Adjustments
Taylor made two changes to the lineup after a 1-0 defeat at Grimsby Town. Edwards moved from midfield to wing-back, and Gordon started in place of Perry. The changes paid off, as the team dominated possession and created multiple chances.
Accrington improved after the break, with Shaun Whalley slashing over from 15 yards and Josh Woods flashing a shot inches wide. However, Exeter’s defence held firm, and the match ended with a deserved win for the Grecians.

Taylor praised the team’s honesty and endeavour, noting that the match was not a spectacle but a solid performance. He highlighted the importance of set pieces, saying, "We have to be a set-piece team. We have to add that to our game."
The win was Exeter’s first of the season, ending a horror run that had seen them win only one of 22 games in the previous campaign. The victory provides a boost as the club looks to improve its league position.
