Exeter City Football Club's women's team player Sophie Gillies is departing the club this summer.

What happened?

Gillies, who scored an incredible 109 goals in 106 appearances, is leaving to pursue a new opportunity.

She joined the club's first team as a 16-year-old in tier five and netted 50 goals in her first season. During the Covid lockdown, Sophie relocated to America to attend university, becoming the first English player to play for the University of California at Irvine.

Why it matters for Exeter City Football Club

Gillies' departure marks the end of an era for the women's team, as she helped establish City at tier three level. She became the first contracted player in the club's history and later scored her 100th goal for the club at St James Park against Plymouth Argyle in October 2025.

What comes next?

As of 26 Jun 2026, Exeter City Football Club is currently 21st in League One, with 49 points from 46 games, and 54 points behind leaders Lincoln. The club's recent form has been LDDDW, with 52 goals scored and 61 conceded, resulting in a -9 goal difference. | Stat | Value | | --- | --- | | League standing | 21st in League One | | Points | 49 | | Recent form | LDDDW | | Goals scored | 52 | | Goals conceded | 61 | | Goal difference | -9 | City Women Manager Abbie Britton said: 'I've known Sophie for over 10 years and have had the privilege of playing alongside, managing and working with her off the pitch, seeing first-hand the impact she's had at this football club.',

Gillies will always be welcome back at St James Park and will leave as an Exeter City legend. Thank you, Sophie.
